Deer urine, the rut attractant
Deer urine is a classic for attracting the White-tailed deer during stand hunting. Depending on the time of season, you choose between plain doe urine, estrus doe urine, or dominant-buck urine to play on curiosity or territorial instinct.
The variants
- Plain doe urine : reassuring, good early in the season.
- Estrus doe urine : deadly at the rut peak, draws the buck in.
- Dominant-buck urine : provokes a territorial buck wanting to challenge a rival.
Using it around scrapes
- Find or create a scrape under an overhanging licking branch.
- Drop a few drops on the ground and on the licking branch.
- Place scent-soaked pads along your approach route to mask your own odor.
- Set the scrape a good distance from your stand, in line with a favorable wind.
Tips for Quebec
- The whitetail rut in Quebec peaks around mid-November: that's when estrus performs best.
- Refresh the urine often, as it loses potency quickly in mild or rainy weather.
- Keep the product cool and use gloves to avoid contaminating the scent.
- Combine with good wind management: no attractant offsets human scent drifting toward game.
Used well, urine turns a plain stand into the hottest spot in the area.
