Calling game in Quebec

Calling means reproducing an animal's vocalizations to trigger a response and lure it within range. It is spectacular and deadly effective for rutting moose, spring wild turkey and white-tailed deer.

Calling moose

From late September to mid-October, the rut peaks:

  • The cow call draws bulls looking for a mate
  • The bull grunt can provoke a rival
  • Rake a shoulder blade or stick through brush to mimic another moose moving

Use a moose call at dawn and dusk, then be patient: a response can take 20 to 40 minutes.

Calling turkey

In spring, mimic the hen (yelp, cluck, purr) with a turkey call to bring in the gobbling tom. Don't overdo it: a few sequences are enough.

Practical tips

  • ALWAYS mind the wind: the animal will often circle to scent you
  • Camouflage completely with camo clothing, especially for turkeys with their exceptional eyesight
  • Don't over-call; vary intensity and leave long silences
  • Be ready to shoot before you call, the animal can arrive fast and silently

Required gear
