Stand hunting in Quebec

Stand hunting means setting up motionless at a strategic spot and waiting for game to walk within range. It is by far the most popular method for moose, white-tailed deer and black bear in Quebec's forests. Done right, it delivers clean, close shots.

Picking your spot

Everything hinges on scouting before the season. Look for signs of activity:

  • Travel trails between feeding areas and cover
  • Rubs and scrapes (deer, rutting moose)
  • Fresh droppings and tracks in mud
  • Edges of logging cuts, deer yards, food sources

Set up a tower stand or a camouflaged ground blind 15-25 m off the trail, never right on it.

Wind direction: the golden rule

Game will smell you long before it sees you. ALWAYS place your blind so the wind blows from the travel zone toward you, never the other way. Check the wind every outing and keep a second stand for opposite winds.

Practical tips

  • Arrive an hour before sunrise and stay until dusk: dawn and dusk are prime time
  • Wear camouflage clothing and keep movement to a minimum
  • Bring binoculars to judge game from a distance
  • Use a riflescope suited to low light
